The auspicious festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is knocking at our doors. Irrespective of what part of the country it is celebrated, food plays an important role in the favorite recipes of Lord Ganesha. Tummi Kura is also known as Leucas Aspera is typically found in open, sandy soil and is abundant in areas with waste especially during the rainy season. This is seen through our India and is considered to be a weed or unnecessary grass and is removed. The Tummi Kura leaves as well as flowers, both are considered for medicinal purposes. This is usually prepared on Ganesh Chaturthi as it is considered the favorite food of Lord Ganesha. And the flower is known to be a favorite of Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesh.

Tummi Kura leaves contain antifungal and antioxidant properties. It is a herb that has the ability to reduce fever. And the flower also known as Drona Pushpi acts as an antibiotics and anti-inflammatory. This works as a blood purifier and cooling agent.

Though the leaves are grown all over Indian and anywhere but it is mostly sold on the days before Ganesh Chaturthi. Tummi Kura is a special dish made only on Ganesh Chaturthi and not eaten at any other time during the entire year. 

Coming to traditionally cooking of, especially these leaves in Telangana region on Ganesh Chaturthi day is a back long story. As we all know the story behind the birth of Lord Ganesha, but there is a relation between the traditional cooking of Tummi Kura and the Ganesha story. The elephant which head was cut had Tummi Kura as its food and was resting, by facing its head towards North. So the people prepare Tummi Kura on that day. It is made with chana dal or toor dal and with Raw Tamarind juice. People usually make chutney, dal, or curries with tummi Kura on this day as a special dish and the most favorite food of Lord Ganesha.

Ingredients:

  • Toor Dal - 1 Cup
  • Tummi Kura - 5 Bunches
  • Onion - 1
  • Green Chillies - 8
  • Curry Leaves
  • Ginger Garlic Paste - 1/2 Tbsp.
  • Cumin Seeds - 1 Tsp.
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 Tsp.
  • Water - 2 Cups
  • Oil - 2 Tbsps.
Tempering Ingredients:
  • Tamarind - 40 g
  • Oil - 4 Tbsps.
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 Tsp.
  • Cumin Seeds - 1 Tsp.
  • Curry Leaves
  • Kasoori Methi - 1/2 Tbsp.
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4th Tsp.
  • Crushed Garlic - 1 1/2 Tbsps.
  • Salt - 1 Tbsp. Or As Required
  • Dry Red Chillies - 4
  • Water - 1 1/2 Cups
Preparation:

  • Firstly clean, wash and soak tamarind for about 20 minutes.
  • In a pressure cooker, add soaked Toor dal along with cleaned tummi kura leaves, onion, green chilies, curry leaves, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, oil, ginger garlic paste, and water.
  • Mix well and pressure cook for about 3 whistles.
  • In meantime till the pressure leaves, in another pan add oil along with mustard and cumin seeds.
  • When the seeds splutter, add dry red chilies, crushed garlic, curry leaves, and kasoori methi.
  • Mix well and cook till it releases an aroma and changes color.
  • Then add turmeric powder and mix well.
  • Now extract the juice from soaked tamarind and add this tamarind juice to the tempering and mix well.
  • Bring to boil and cook for about 2 minutes.
  • When the pressure leaves from the cooker, remove and mash the dal very softly.
  • Now add this boiled tempering into the dal and mix well.
  • Close and simmer for about 2 minutes.
  • Then finally add coriander leaves and mix well.
  • Serve hot with hot steam rice along with a gallop of ghee and enjoy.

  • Bring to boil and cook for about 2 minutes.









  • When the pressure leaves from the cooker, remove and mash the dal very softly.



  • Now add this boiled tempering into the dal and mix well.
  • Close and simmer for about 2 minutes.




  • Then finally add coriander leaves and mix well.



  • Serve hot with hot steam rice along with a gallop of ghee and enjoy.
