Malabar Spinach Dal |  బచ్చలి కూర పప్పు | Special Desi Recipes

Bachali kura pappu is one of the traditional dal recipe done with Malabar spinach ( bachali kura ) and toor dal. It is an easy Indian recipe prepared with fresh green leaves and dal. This recipe goes well either with rice or roti and is loaded with protein.

Malabar Spinach is also known as Basella Alba / Basella Rubra. It has many different names like Vine Spinach, Red Vine Spinach, Creeping Spinach, Bachali Kura Etc. Basella Alba is a fast-growing leaf vegetable in the hot sun, humid climate.

Malabar spinach toor dal ( Bachalikura pappu ) is one of the heartwarming dish loaded with nutritious greens and protein dal. These protein-rich, vibrant green have very thick in texture. It is very easy to grow Malabar spinach at home with just a seed. We having creeping Malabar spinach which grows along the wire/thread with Green Leaves and Red wine thick stem. Cooking fresh leaves right away from plants is a blessing.




Malabar spinach is high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron, and calcium. Another good reason to eat Malabar spinach is that it has a good amount of antioxidants, particularly beta carotene and lutein, those naturally occurring chemicals that help keep your cells from aging.

They are many dishes with bachali kura. One among and mostly prepared dishes at our home is bachali Kura Pappu ( Malabar spinach tour dal ) and at some time we use to prepare Malabar spinach chutney, bajji, dry dal curry, and Malabar spinach curd curry. Whatever the dish is it tastes awsome.

Bachali kura pappu is popular and very know for the recipe. Here am sharing a dal recipe in a pressure cooker. first and foremost clean the leaves very well without any impurities. Wash the leaves 2 or 3 times or in running water. I use toor dal as well as chana dal for perfect dal texture. Chana dal helps the recipe tastier and looks good with the perfect texture. In this recipe, I pressure cooked all the ingredients including dal and leaves then added tempering along with tamarind juice. It was just like the palak dal but the taste will differ for Malabar spinach dal. Try and enjoy this tasty recipe with your loved ones.

Ingredients:

  • Malabar Spinach - 2 Bunches
  • Toor Dal - 1 Cup
  • Chana Dal - 1 Tbsp.
  • Water - 2 1/2 Cups
  • Red Chilli Powder - 1 Tbsp.
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4th Tsp.
  • Tomatoes - 4
  • Green Chillies - 4
  • Onion - 1
  • Curry Leaves
  • Ginger Garlic Paste - 1/2 Tbsp.
  • Tamarind - 35 g Or Big Lemon Size

Tempering Ingredients:

  • Oil - 4 Tbsps.
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 Tsp.
  • Cumin Seeds - 1 Tsp.
  • Dry Red Chillies - 2
  • Crushed Garlic - 1 1/2 Tbsps.
  • Curry Leaves
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4th Tsp.

Preparation:

  • In Bowl add tamarind and clean tamarind.
  • Add water and soak tamarind in water for about 20 minutes.
  • In a pressure cooker, add soaked toor and chana dal, onions, green chilies, curry leaves, ginger-garlic paste, Malabar spinach, turmeric powder, and red chili powder along with water.
  • Mix well and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
  • In Another pan add oil, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dry red chilies, crushed garlic, and curry leaves and mix well.
  • When it releases aroma, add turmeric powder and mix well.
  • Now extract the juice from the tamarind and add this to the tempering.
  • Add salt according to the taste and mix well.
  • Bring to a boil and cook for about 5 Minutes.
  • In the meantime, dal and spinach are cooked well and pressure leaves completely
  • Now remove the weight and mash the dal.
  • Now add the tamarind juice and bring it to a boil.
  • Close and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Finally, add coriander leaves and mix well.
  • Serve hot with roti, naan, chapati, or even goes well with plain rice.
