Punarnava is a traditional ayurvedic plant that is used to rejuvenate the whole body." Punarnava " word itself says the meaning, it means "renew", or " bring back to life" which literally translates into" something that renews or replenishes the body ".

Punarnava Toor Dal - with detail photo and video recipe. Punarnava Toor Dal is one of the popular recipes in villages. It has a great medicinal value. Punarva is also known as galijeru leaves. These punarva leaves are of two types like white punarva and red punarva leaves. White Punarnava is also called as thella galijeru aaku and red punarnava leaves also called as erra galijeru aakulu.

Punarnava is primarily used for kidney and urinary disorders. It improves the functioning of kidneys damaged by diabetes. It helps with stomach disorders and good for diabetes and the liver. Punarnava plants are used as medicine in Ayurveda. It has various health benefits due to its high nutritional value. It contains vitamin C, Iron, protein, calcium, and sodium among others.

Today's recipe is about the Punarnava Toor dal recipe which can be cook just like the palak toor dal. But, here the recipe is just done with tomato instead of tamarind juice. Quick, easy, and tasty dal recipe with healthy and fresh greens with garlic tempering.

Ingredients:

  • Punarnava - 2 Bunches
  • Toor Dal - 1 1/2 Cups Or 150 g
  • Tomatoes - 4
  • Onion - 1
  • Green Chillies -4
  • Curry Leaves
  • Ginger Garlic Paste - 1/2 Tbsp.
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4th Tsp.
  • Red Chilli Powder - 1 1/2 Tbsps.
  • Water - 3 Cups Of Water ( 1 Cup Dal = 2 Cups Water )
  • Salt - As Required
  • Coriander leaves

Tempering Ingredients:

  • Oil - 4 Tbsps.
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 Tsp.
  • Cumin Seeds - 1 Tsp.
  • Dry Red Chillies - 4
  • Crushed Garlic - 1 Tbsp.
  • Curry Leaves
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4th Tsp.

Preparation:

  • In a pressure cooker, add cleaned and washed punarnava ( galijeru aaku ) along with onions, toor dal, green chilies, curry leaves, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, tomatoes, red chilies, and oil.
  • Mix well and pressure cook the dal for about 2 whistles.
  • When pressure leaves completely open and mash the dal and leaves and mix well.
  • In another pan add oil along with mustard, cumin seeds, dry red chilies, crushed garlic, and turmeric powder and mix well.
  • When the tempering releases aroma, add this tempering into the cooked dal and mix well.
  • Cook for about 2 Minutes.
  • Finally, add coriander leaves and mix well.
  • Serve hot with plain rice or even with roti.
