Water Apple - A Succulent delicious fruit is popular for its thirst-quenching and innately crunchy texture can be consumed raw or also can be processed as pickles and jams. Check out the recipe below for the luscious water apple pickle recipe which just taste like Indian Gooseberry ( Amla )
Water Apple commonly referred to as "Chambakka "or " Pani Seb" in Hindi, " Jambu" or " Panneer Naval" in Tamil, "Jambakka" in Malayalam and "Gulaabijamikaayalu" in Telugu. The crunchy texture of water apple is quite sweet in taste when ripe. However, unripe pale green water apple with astringent flavor can be used in the preparation of pickles, curries, and Juices. This unripe water apple turns a bright pinkish-red once completely ripened. These ripe water apple fruits are bell-shaped with juicy flesh and a sweet taste.
The nutritional value of this water apple either it is riped or unripe has many health benefits. It contains more water content and is rich in vitamin C, A, and abundant B vitamins. It also helps to boost our immunity.
Today's recipe is about unripe water apple pickles. As the taste of the unripe water apple is just the same as the Indian Gooseberry with astringent flavor, pickle is the perfect recipe to go this fruit. This was the first time am preparing this pickle. The bright and peaceful color of the fruits attracts and makes me search for the fruits. As I don't know anything about the fruit, the taste of the fruits just senses me just like amla. So I started preparing the pickle just like amla pickle. For this, I used Green chilies and sesame seeds for the gravy. After tasting the pickle, surprised me it was just like Indian Gooseberry ( Amla ) Pickle. The taste of the fruits automatically turns tangy with a crunchy texture.

Video Recipe Of Water Apple Pickle
Ingredients:
- Water Apple - 300 g
- Mustard Seeds - 1/2 Tbsp.
- Cumin Seeds - 1 Tsp.
- Fenugreek Seeds - 1/4th Tsp.
- Sesame Seeds - 75 g Or 1/2 Cup
- Green Chillies - 100 g
Tempering Ingredients:
- Oil - 1/2 Cup
- Mustard Seeds - 1/2 Tsp.
- Cumin Seeds - 1/2 Tsp.
- Crushed Garlic - 1 1/2 Tbsps
- Curry Leaves
- Turmeric Powder - 1/2 Tsp.
- Salt - 2 1/2 Tbsps.
Preparation:
- Clean and cut water apple edges and remove the black part.
- No in another pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, and sesame seeds.
- Mix well and saute till the seeds splutter.
- When the seeds splutter, remove and keep aside till the seeds become cool.
- In the same pan add oil then add green Achilles and saute till it releases an aroma and changes color.
- When done remove and add to blender.
- When everything becomes cool, add to blender and blend.
- In the same oil, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, crushed garlic, and curry leaves.
- Mix well and saute till it releases aroma.
- Then add chopped water apple, mix well and saute for about 1 Minute.
- Simmer for 1 minute and saute again for about 2 minutes.
- Now add blended sesame powder and mix well.
- Saute for about 2 minutes and cook for about 2 minutes.
- Now remove and rest for about 8 hours.
- After 8 hours, the pickle releases oil.
- Serve hot and enjoy with plain rice along with ghee and omelette.
